Production Blog: People want to be a part of something big

Above is a video of the black eyed peas performance of "I gotta feeling" at Oprah's 24th season kick off party. This is awesome, this gets me excited and this proof that people want to be apart of something big.

My wife showed me this video this past weekend and I loved it. How awesome is it that 21,000 or so came together and did one massive dance. How much fun would it have been to take part in it? How much fun would it have been just to watch it from the towers above the Chicago street.

I found out by searching the blogs that Carlos Whitaker of Ragga Muffin soul also did a short but powerful post about this video.

I have done some pretty intense research about advertising the past few weeks. One of the biggest things that I have found is that people want to be apart of something BIG! Which is one of the points of Carlos' blog post.

God is the biggest, greatest most awesome thing ever. The story of Jesus is the most exciting thing ever. How can we the church tell HIS story in a way that makes people of our Facebook, iphone, in debt, and hurting society want to follow HIM and dance like this for HIM.

What is the big thing we are missing? Should we completely change the way we do church? Do you have to sing every Sunday? I didn't not say worship I said sing. Could you portray the story without talking at people? I am not saying we SHOULD do any of these but what if we, the church, did? What would change? What if we laid aside our excuses as to why we shouldn't change things and just did it? What if you laid aside your excuses and DID the impossible plan God has laid in your heart? What if?

Sunday Look back 9-27-09 " He smelled like Peppermint"

The Photo has nothing to do with this week I just think it's funny. Jeff made the comment under the picture on Facebook that something smelled like peppermint. Great shot Lisa

1. Another Great Sunday at DP!

2. Our worship leader David played drums this week and did a great job.

3. We are working some stuff out with the audio. We know it's still a little loud and we like it that way!

4. The Benjamin video was funny and a good opener to Philip

5. I know speaking about financial issues is tough and Philip always handles it well

6. I need some one to run the intelligent lights. If anyone is interested please let me know. No experience needed.

7. Has anyone noticed the TV hanging in the corner next to the production booth?

Some things change.......

Every once in a while in ministry you come the realization that what you are doing is not working. Whether it is a ministry, a mind set or the entire mission. There comes a point when you have to stop the train and turn it around no matter how how far into the journey you are or how hard it is.

I came to that point the other day in my own life with a project I was working for our church. I have spent many, many hours trying to make it work. I have talked about it, pushed it and at times tried to force people into it. After a few events, a few talks with some people I respect and a lot of prayer I came to the realization that I was so busy pushing for what I thought was best I forgot to ask God what he wanted. I forgot to seek what God wanted for my life and my ministry.

It is really funny how God works because the day that let go of what I wanted God gave me an idea that I think is a game changer. I have talked with a few people about it and I have spent a lot of time praying about it. Will this project fail? Maybe, but I do not fear failure. I believe that as long as I continue to seek God, what he want s to be done will be done and if that means this project doesn't work so be it.

Get addicted to Monopoly

I have found one of the most addictive games ever. The best part is you can only play it once a day until you money runs out. Monopoly city streets basically takes almost every street in the world and makes it available for you to buy. Once you but the street you can put builds on all shapes and sizes on it. Each building you buy earns you more rent each day. It is more complex than that so read the rules first. I own several streets here in the East Atlanta area. Can you beat me at Monopoly City Streets? You can try here

Sunday Look Back 9-20-09

  • We had lots of rain this week I am looking so forwarded to seeing the sun again.
  • It was however bright on the inside on Sunday morning.
  • Band was great as always. Thanks again to Chandler for filling in at drums!
  • Joy gets better every week on the computer. I am really excited to see her grow.
  • Videos this week were funny. I have posted the one from igniter media below.
  • Philip spoke on a hard subject. All of the subjects in this series are hard. He did a great job!
  • Baptism was short but it got the job done. The rain held up just long enough for us to baptize the 8-9 candidates.
  • Next week we are talking about improving your finances. We know people hate to talk about finances, so we have added some stuff to the service to really lighten the mood and make this Sunday one of the funniest most informational Sundays we have ever had!!!!

Sunday Look back 9-13-09

I could possibly call this past Sunday the loudest Sunday ever at DP and that is saying something. That said the music was awesome! Our band is amazing! The staff football team has 1 year of bragging rights over the volunteers. All in all it was our best anniversary yet and it is only getting better!

1. Did any one notice the new TV in the corner by the Production booth. It runs announcement slides.

2. We are doing away with announcements at the end of services. So to get your announcement fix you can visit the DP Blog, DP Facebook Page, our Twitter page and the website. Or if you like emailed announcements sign up for the blast.

3. Band was really good

4. Philip Spoke on joining the revolution. Are you ready?

5. Philip and David visited the theater on Sunday morning. I am really thankful for that place and really thankful to be out of it!

6. Staff took the volunteer staff football game 11-5. Bragging rights for 1 year!

It was only a year ago......

Discover Point church is celebrating year number 4 this weekend. Not that we had anything to do with it but it has been an awesome four years. I always get accused of thinking too far in advanced so with this blog I would like to look back and thank God for everything that he has done at DPC and in my life over the last year.

Last year at this time we met at Peachtree academy. Me and David were getting ready a funny video of Philip first sermon ever (which is still very funny). We had plans to be in a permanent location but had no idea where. David and Laurah Hensley were our every week production team. Staff member Brien Duke was not married. We have seen several people come to know Christ. We had half the number of people we have today. We had Baptized a lot less people. . We did not have Propresenter or a mac (sorry had to throw that one in). We have met so many new people. We had not yet met Trista and Jeremy. Our kids program has come a long way. Some of you have had surgeries. Some of you have gotten married some have had new editions. Me and Philip used to have to climb on the roof of PTA every week to make sure it was dark in the gym where we met. Our band has added new members. Java Point opened. We have had our first Kids Jamm! Of course we moved into the Parker Road location. Are we satisfied??? Heck no? Will next year be better? That's out of our hands but we are planning a huge year! I hope you all get the chance to see what's next at DP.

What is your favorite moment from DPC over the last year?

Production Blog: Propresenter 4 is Coming

And they have 100 things they are adding, 100! I personally can't wait. Pro Presenter is the head of the class when it comes to church presentation software. It is quit possibly the most powerful presentation software and is the easiest to train volunteers on. Now they are adding 100 new things wow I can't wait to see what all they are going to do.

If you want a preview of the new additions follow @propresenter on twitter. Be sure to check out Pro Presenter 4 when it comes out. I know I will!

Chapter 5 is Coming this Sunday

It's hard to believe that our 4 year anniversary is finally here. This week we will celebrate what God has done through our church and what he is going to do. We as a staff know that nothing we have done over the past 4 years would matter if it was not done to the glory of God. We are excited about the next year it is going to be a wild year!

We are throwing a party the celebration across the street at the park! Please bring an appetizer style dish to the party (enough to feed your family plus one).

There will also be a Staff vs Volunteers football game for bragging rights.
The Staff team includes:
Philip Lehman
David Collinsworth
Jeff McCammon
Brien Duke
Trista Ross
Jeremy Ross
Brad Williams

Rules
1. So the volunteer team will need 7 people and one must be a female.
2. We will play 1 point per touch down first to 11 wins
3. 2 hand touch
4. 2 completions for a first down (really short passes don't count)
5. 5 Mississippi before you can cross the line of scrimmage

Sound good?

Below are the 2 teaser videos for this weekend if you missed them......

Sunday Look Back 9-6-09

Another great day at DP! Here are my thoughts on it

1. We had sound issues this week sorry. They will be good to go by next week!
2. The Theme to Beverly Hills Cop preformed by James Greene was awesome!
3. Most of the band was out of town so we had an acoustic set today. David Lisa Cole and James did a good job.
4. If you were our of town this week you missed a really good message! So go back and listen to it on the podcast!
5. Retro was a great series you will see again! Next time we will do either the 70's or the 90's.
6. I always love communion services. They remind you of the awesome sacrifice our Lord made.
7. I Can't wait for next week!

Production Blog: I don't want to be that church....

Please note that I write this blog by myself for my opinions. I play a small role in the decisions made at Discover Point Church. Just because I write it in my blog does not mean that it is going to happen or that that the rest of the staff agrees with me. If the rest f the staff does not agree with me then that's okay. I trust the leadership God has in place at my church period. I may not like it but I get it. That said, on with this blog post......

I don't get caught up in numbers too often. I like numbers, I like stats and I like to be able to use them to compare and plan with. I just don't get real excited about numbers or increase in numbers. At DPC we have experienced a lot of growth lately and it has been exciting to see new people come to Christ. We have had a lot of visitors over the past few weeks and that too has been exciting! It would be easy to assume that what we are doing is working. It would be easy to get comfortable and continue down the same path were going because guess what it is working. It would be easy except for one thing WE ARE NOT FINISHED FOLKS!

Our job is not done, we have not arrived and hopefully we will never arrive. We live in a culture of change and if we as a church are not willing to change with the culture then we will cease to be relevant (I hate the word relevant) in our culture. I am not saying be like the culture but we must continue as Tim Stevens says "to leverage the culture". Perry noble really inspired me this morning when he wrote this simple line in his blog. "I don’t want to be the guy who never attempts anything great and plays if safe…". I am going to take it one step further and say I never want to be the church who never attempts something great, who plays it safe. We are only at the tip of the iceberg folks, there are so many opportunities for us to reach our community. We have a few community projects coming up this fall that we really want someone to step up and organize. Our Discover Kids program is booming and will only continue to grow. I hope within the next we can begin a live stream of all of our services every Sunday online. These are just a few things that will take place over the next year. I have a feeling we are going to do some crazy stuff to reach people.
Side Note: If you are already volunteering somewhere thank you, and don't burn yourself out by volunteering for too much. We want new volunteers to step up.

If you think the move last year was big (and it was) then you are going to be blown away this year! There is change in the air. There is a spirit of excitement! There is a revolution coming to east Atlanta you can either jump on board and take part or you can sit on the sidelines and play it safe. I know where I will be.
